Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Yeasts are eukaryotic micro-organisms classified in the kingdom Fungi, with about 1500 species currently described; they dominate fungal diversity in the oceans. Most reproduce asexually by budding, although a few do so by binary fission. Yeasts are unicellular, although some species with yeast forms may become multicellular through the formation of a string of connected budding cells known as pseudohyphae, or false hyphae as seen in most molds. Yeast size can vary greatly depending on the species, typically measuring 34 µm in diameter, although some yeasts can reach over 40 µm. The yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used in baking and fermenting alcoholic beverages for thousands of years. It is also extremely important as a model organism in modern cell biology research, and is one of the most thoroughly researched eukaryotic microorganisms. Researchers have used it to gather information about the biology of the eukaryotic cell and ultimately human biology. Other species of yeast, such as Candida albicans, are opportunistic pathogens and can cause infections in humans. Yeasts have recently been used to generate electricity in microbial fuel cells, and produce ethanol for the biofuel industry. Yeasts do not form a single taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping. www.bustmold.com Molds, or moulds, are fungi that grow in the form of mycelia and usually produce masses of spores that are most commonly asexual but can also be sexual. Mold is the growth of these minute fungi on organic matter usually resembling a downy or furry coating. Molds do not make up a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping–they can be found in the divisions Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota. Mold can grow on food, in closed containers, and even in refrigerators. Mold is not photosynthetic and does not require sunlight; often, sunlight will kill it. Mold does require food and moisture, although xerophilic molds can grow using water vapor in the air as their only water source. When inhaled, mold spores may germinate, attaching to cells along the respiratory tract and causing problems in those with weak immune systems. Some spores release potent toxins, known as mycotoxins; for example, Stachybotrys spores can cause very severe symptoms and lung lesions in children. Mold spores are also important and very prominent allergens. http
